Around the time Ben first rode a boogie board, his parents handed him a disposable camera. He is a self-taught photographer and learned through years of trial and error. He spent the majority of his childhood in upstate New York, but found a love for the ocean amongst the slow pace of Narragansett, Rhode Island. Ben moved to the West coast and earned a BA in Philosophy from the University of California at San Diego (UCSD).
While taking photos Ben has been tear gassed, attacked by a dog, and has had numerous near-drowning experiences and reef lacerations. He has inadvertently encountered sharks, venomous snakes, and wolves. He likes to swim, and loves big barreling waves; it was natural to toss a pair of fins and a fisheye lens into the mix. At 21, he was one of the youngest staff photographers ever for Surfer Magazine. Photography has brought him to locales like Canada, Mexico, Brazil, England, Costa Rica, Chile, Hawaii, and throughout the continental United States. His watermen skills combined with a creative vision lead to some of the most progressive images in the action sports industry today.
When not on assignment Ben enjoys training, playing chess and writing; he currently resides in La Jolla, California.
