Born in Los Angeles, John O'Brien is an avid surfer, artist, photographer, actor, and writer. Inspiring people with his art motivates him to paint and photograph surf. His creative background includes careers at The New Yorker, Architectural Digest, and Warner Bros. As a postgraduate he has studied painting at New York University, illustration at the School of Visual Arts in New York, photography at Santa Monica College, and graphic design at UCLA. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of California at Berkeley in 1988 and a degree in Philosophy from Mount St. Mary's College in Maryland in 1993.
John O'Brien is a member of the Screen Actors Guild. Soon he will be filming a surfing show he's currently creating. He donates a portion of his art, photography, and goods to Catholic Charities, Surfrider Foundation events, and other charities.
John O'Brien's original images of the crucial part of surfing, the waves, bring a fresh perspective to the surf art genre.
