Over the past few years, artist Phil Roberts has created a one-of-a-kind trophy surfboard for the winner of the Billabong Pipe Masters. This year he collaborated with surf photographer Brian Bielmann and surfer/shaper Gerry Lopez to create a true masterpiece. The board, shaped by Lopez is the same board that he rode at Pipeline in the 1970s, featuring a photo of Andy Irons at Pipeline (see the event poster too!), brought to life by artist Phil Roberts.
Watch the behind the scenes video below:
For the last two years I’ve had the honor to portray Andy Irons on the board with the help of Brian Bielmann‘s photography. These boards are emotional pieces of art to do and I’m proud of how they came out. It’s been an honor to have been the artist supplying the trophies for the most prestigious surfing event in the world. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would be making boards with the legendary Gerry Lopez and creating the most coveted and valuable surfboard in the world. Stoked to be a part of surfing history.
Update: Joel Parkinson won the 2012 Pipe Masters (and with it the ASP World Title!). So a massive congratulations to Parko!! Long overdue. Here is celebrating his win about to be presented with his trophy surfboard by Gerry Lopez (holding the board to the right).
